Why is Coconut Oil the best oil to use for Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling has made its way to become one of the best ways to remove stains, bacteria on your teeth and gums & promote oral health. This practice actually dates back thousands of years ago—it has finally gained popularity in a lot of countries, especially the US. Primarily used in Ayurvedic medicine, this practice is regarded as an excellent oral detoxification method, which is simply done by swishing a tablespoon of oil in the mouth for about 10 to 20 minutes. It works by cleaning the oral cavity in the same way that soap cleanses dirt on applied surfaces.

Basically, it works by getting rid of the toxins out of the mouth to create a clean oral environment, which is detrimental to one’s overall health. Generally, this procedure has been observed as a traditional Indian remedy to help whiten teeth; cure tooth decay; heal bleeding gums; kill bad breath; prevent heart disease; soothe throat dryness; reduce inflammation; boost immune system; and much more.

Now, among the oils used for this practice, why is it that coconut oil is considered the best?

First of all, it is important to note that a lot of research done on oil pulling mostly tested sesame seed oil, as being a staple in India, it is the one that is used by many Ayurvedic medicinal practitioners. However, modern oil pulling has shifted more into the use of coconut oil. Why? Because this type of oil has been shown to balance hormones, improve digestion, balance blood sugar, improve energy, moisturize skin, burn fat, as well as even kill Candida, reduce cellulite and reduce wrinkles and age spots. And because coconut oil is highly absorbable, you will be able to experience many of its benefits simply by oil pulling.

When using this type of oil though, it is best to follow specific procedures to get the most favorable results. Here are the steps to take:

  • In a gentle manner, swish about 10ml of coconut oil in your mouth for about 5 to 15 minutes, while making sure that you do not swallow any of the oil.
  • Spit out the swished oil into the trash and immediately rinse your mouth out with warm water. You can also use salted water to have those extra antimicrobial properties.
  • Finally, brush your teeth normally as you would do.

Ideally you will do this first thing in the morning before you drink anything or brush your teeth; however it does work when done anytime of the day. And that is how it is done! Easy!

Initially, we recommend oil pulling everyday for 2 weeks and 3 to 4 times a week thereafter. As you can see, this is just a simple procedure that generates very effective results.
